How Does Pollen Affect Your Car?

Pollen makes your car look terrible and it gets absolutely everywhere, but is it possible that it’s done more damage than you think? Collision Correction & Customs wants you to know that pollen can actually be a serious problem for your car in a few different ways.

Chews through Clear Coats and Paint

You can’t see it with the naked eye, but pollen particles are spiky and sharp. And they build up fast, creating thick layers of pollen that scrub and scratch against your car’s surface. Pollen is also acidic, which makes it that much more damaging to the clear coat and to the paint layers on your car’s surface. Sometimes just rinsing the car isn’t enough to get all the pollen off, either.

Stains Upholstery

It’s impossible to keep pollen out of your car, because every time you get in or out, you’re letting pollen particles in. But if you’re ignoring that the pollen is there, it can cause problems for your car’s interior, too. Again, pollen particles are sharp and scratchy, so they can scuff and scratch interior surfaces like the dashboard and doors. And pollen can stick to upholstery, too, causing damage to fabric fibers and leather surfaces alike.

Clogs the Air Filter

Believe it or not, pollen can also make it tougher for your car’s engine to function. That happens because the car needs ambient air so that the engine can run. As the car draws in the air, it goes through the air filter first. That keeps dirt and debris out of the engine. If the air filter is overwhelmed by pollen particles, though, some of them might get through or simply clog the air filter, which keeps air out of the engine at all.

Clogs the Cabin Air Filter

It isn’t just your car’s engine that can suffer, though. Some of the air that goes through your car’s air filter is diverted to the passenger cabin. There’s a second air filter, the cabin air filter, that’s designed to catch even smaller particles so that you and your passengers have clean air to breathe. An overwhelmed or clogged air filter isn’t catching much, and that means the burden falls more on the cabin air filter. Once it’s clogged, you start to have bigger issues with air quality in the passenger cabin.
