How to Protect Your Car from Hail Damage

Hail is a form of frozen precipitation that forms in the upper levels of thunderstorm clouds. As hail falls, it holds its form and tends to create some pretty ugly damage, especially to cars. Collision Correction and Customs has some information for you that can help you to be proactive about preventing hail damage

Stay Aware of the Weather

Hail is not always completely predictable, but weather forecasting has come a long way since the days when the weather was more of a guess. If you can start to make a habit of checking the weather more regularly, you can get a little bit of early warning about when hail is likely. You may also want to sign up for weather alerts for your area. Certain times of the year are more prone to hail, too.

Look for Covered Parking Whenever Possible

The absolute best way to protect your car from hail damage is to put a building around it. A garage and even a carport offers protection from hail as it falls. If you’re out and about and hail is likely, try to make sure that you park your car in a protected area, like a parking garage. Unfortunately, not every home has a garage or even space to build one and not every area has a plethora of covered parking available.

Invest in a Car Cover

Car covers designed to protect against hail damage do exist, but you need to be careful about what you’re purchasing. What you’re looking for is a cover that has a significant amount of padding that can protect the car from hail. These are often bulky and might be difficult to maneuver easily when there’s a storm coming. Car covers may not offer as much protection as you need, however, because covered parking is always much better.

Repairing Hail Damage Protects Your Car’s Lifespan

The big problem with hail damage isn’t so much the dents, although those aren’t great. It’s the fact that hail damage can cause cracks and flakes in the paint, and that can lead to bigger problems. Primer and paint protect your car from rust, which eats away at the metal of your car. If you leave hail damage unrepaired, that can accelerate the formation of rust and shorten the life of your car.
